It is estimated that there are over 150 million orphans worldwide. These children are at risk for trafficking, exploitation, abuse, starvation and psychological disorders. In addition to these orphans, millions of children are in danger of abandonment, disease, malnutrition and lack of education due to extreme poverty.
Ornaments 4 Orphans also strives to combat the global orphan crisis through orphan prevention in East Africa. Local artisans employed by Ornaments 4 Orphans experience a reliable income which enables them to provide for their families. They are able to make rent, put food on their tables, pay their children’s school fees, and purchase medications and other necessities which improve their overall standard of living.
We focus on practicing fair trade principles to empower artisans in impoverished communities. We are working primarily in Uganda but also source product from Kenya and Rwanda. Our non-profit partners are in Uganda, and they do a number of things. They provide care for orphans, provide education, and work to reconcile families in the community. Often the children have a parent or family member that's alive, so they work to get them back with family.
What we are trying to do as an organization is combat the orphan crisis in East Africa by providing job opportunities to working parents (alleviate poverty and prevents orphans) as well as supporting organizations that are caring for orphans.
